Aranyaka : book of the forest - Chennai Westline 2019 - 158 p. ill. 24 cm.

Includes bibliographic references and index.

The title of this book, Aranyaka, meaning 'of the forest', alludes to a set of 3,000-year-old Vedic scriptures full of mysterious metaphors, composed after the Samhitas (hymn collections), alongside the Brahmanas (ritual manuals), but before the Upanishads (philosophical expositions). This book is inspired not so much by these scriptures themselves as it is by the foundational role forests play in Vedic lore. Vedic thought is essentially about what it means to be cultured and civilised: the journey from hunger and fear, through domestication, towards empathy. I realised this after spending 20 years working with the Puranas (story chronicles) that have communicated Vedic lore for the past 2000 years."--Devdutt Pattanaik, page 3 of unnumbered pages.
